Description:

This fish is blue-green on the back with silver sides. It also has a distinctive secondary thread-like dorsal fin and a dark spot just behind the gills toward the top of the fish.

Feeding Habits:

This herring feeds on plankton, crabs and shrimp.

Range:

Western Atlantic from Chesapeake Bay to Brazil.

Habitat:

Depth of 5-10 feet in harbors and shallow coastal areas.

Typical Size:

They can reach a length of just over a foot and weigh just under a pound.
