The body color is brown and its shade depends on the color of the bottom, with numerous spots and blotches; 3 prominent eye-like spots forming a triangle; one spot on lateral line, one above, one below; numerous white spots scattered over body and fins; strong canine-like teeth; caudal fin in shape of wedge with its tip in the middle.
Gulf flounder are bottom-dwelling carnivorous fish that feed primarily on crustaceans and small fish.
The gulf flounder inhabits western Atlantic waters from North Carolina to southern Florida, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean.
Most of the year, this fish is found in relatively shallow areas, preferring soft bottom near such cover as bars or rubble. Also holes in grass beds and edges of channels.
Averages 1-3 pounds, tops is 5 or 6 pounds.
