Description:

Swordfish are dark brown to purple overall with a whitish belly. The distinguishing feature, however, is the huge bill or sword - much longer and wider than the bills of Marlins and Sailfish. The eye is also very large. The dorsal fin is tall, curved and cannot be retracted without breaking the joint. The Swordfish tail forms a very broad crescent shape.

Feeding Habits:

Swordfish feed on crustaceans, squids, anchovies, hakes, mackerels, rockfishes, and other fish.

Range:

Swordfish are found in the Atlantic from Newfoundland south to Argentina and in the Pacific from Oregon south to Chile.

Habitat:

Swordfish are found near shore and in the deep sea.

Typical Size:

The average weights of the Swordfish is well under 50 pounds but are also caught from 100 to 1000 pounds.
