Description:

The Swordspine Snook is yellowish-green to brown-green overall and silvery on the belly. They have a long sharp spine on their anal fin and when it is folded against the body it extends past the beginning of the caudal (tail) fin.

Feeding Habits:

Swordspine snook eat mostly small fish and shrimp, though squid forms a small part of their diet. They are carnivorous predators, ambushing prey when they come into range.

Range:

The Swordspine is also the most rare of Florida's Snook species, probably occurring only in protected canals and streams of extreme South Florida. It also is found in the Caribbean.

Habitat:

The Swordspine Snook occur in inshore estuarine habitats from south Florida to as far north on east coast as St. Lucie River.

Typical Size:

The Swordspine is usually less than 1 pound.
