A black mark along gill opening, but not along flank. Silvery, with a greenish or bluish back.

Feeding Habits:

The Menhaden feed mostly on plankton.

Range:

Found from North Carolina to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.

Habitat:

Found near shore and in lower bays, juveniles are in found in estuaries and rivers.

Typical Size:

The Menhaden is just a couple of inches long and a few ounces in weight.
